Mentor/Mentee: A Musical Family Tree
CPNJ Musicans'Choice Chamber Music Series
Apr 25 2027 at 1:03 PM EDT
The program for Mentor/Mentee is based on relationships between composer/teachers and their students, highlighting both the teacher’s influence and the student’s independent development. Flutist Katherine McClure, oboist Melissa Bohl, and pianist Clipper Erickson will begin with music by the eminent French composition teacher Nadia Boulanger. The trio then moves on to music by her students Jean-Michel Damase and Nathanial Dett, who also drew heavily on his African-American background. Another mentor/mentee relationship exists between English composer Herbert Howells and his student Madeleine Dring. And bringing the mentor/mentee concept into the present and future, the final pairing involves the music of CPNJ trustee Joel Phillips, and that of his mentee Sophie Wang, a participant in CPNJ’s first Young Composers Initiative.
