This concert begins a four-season journey as Music Director Kyle Ritenauer guides the Capital Philharmonic through all four of Johannes Brahms’s symphonies. We begin with Beethoven’s dramatic Egmont Overture, setting the stage for Brahms’s long-awaited first symphonic effort. In future seasons, audiences will follow the evolution of Brahms’s symphonic voice as he moves beyond Beethoven’s formidable legacy to find a language unmistakably his own. The concert also features the winner of the Mary G. Roebling Youth Concerto Competition, showcasing one of the area’s most talented emerging musicians at an important milestone in a young artist’s journey. A pre-concert lecture provides additional context for the music and the stories behind its creation.
